Description

General Description

Waterproofing of Terraces and Mineral Surfaces

Monestir Crack and Joint Waterproofing is a water-based liquid treatment designed to reduce water penetration through flooring, joints, and small cracks. It is especially suitable for terraces, attics, roofs, and roof tiles where seepage or leaks occur, although it can be used both indoors and outdoors. It is compatible with terracotta, stone, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, marble, single-layer cladding, slate, rustic stoneware, aged marble, granite, and hydraulic mosaic.

How It Works

Unlike a waterproofing membrane that creates a thick layer on the substrate, this product penetrates the materials and joints. It does not form a continuous surface film, so it maintains breathability and does not significantly alter the appearance or the original slip-resistant properties of the flooring. The protection also helps reduce moisture stains, salt efflorescence, and conditions that promote mold growth. Monestir further describes it as a consolidant, helping to limit the aging and wear of porous materials exposed to the elements and freeze-thaw cycles.

Important: This product does not replace the repair of a damaged joint.

It is designed for small joints and cracks. If there are wide, deep cracks, open joints, or significant loss of material, these must first be repaired and repointed with an appropriate mortar or material. The waterproofing agent is a penetrating liquid and does not have the viscosity necessary to physically fill a large crack.

Surface Preparation

The pavement must be perfectly clean, swept, and completely dry. Dust, moss, mold, efflorescence, construction debris, and any treatments that may prevent absorption must be removed. After cleaning with water or specific products, wait until the internal moisture in the surface has completely dried out.

Application

Use undiluted. Shake well before use and pour into a clean container. Apply with a wide brush or roller, spreading a light, uniform, and well-stretched coat over both the tiles and the grout lines. Do not leave puddles or pooled product. On low-absorbent materials, any excess remaining on the surface can be removed with a dry cloth approximately five minutes later.

To increase protection, Monestir recommends a second coat, which can be applied approximately one hour after the first, ensuring that the surface has properly absorbed the treatment.

Coverage and Drying

The current coverage rate indicated by Monestir is approximately 8 to 12 m²/L, depending on the porosity of the material and the joints. Surface drying is very fast, but full effectiveness is achieved in approximately 24 hours. The recommended application temperature is between 5 and 35 °C. Tools can be cleaned with water.
