Description

General Description

Breathable Waterproofing for Facades

Hidroclay Monestir is a water-based water-repellent treatment developed to protect facades and absorbent mineral cladding from water penetration. It is particularly suitable for exposed brick, single-layer cladding, natural stone, and concrete, both indoors and outdoors.

Its purpose is to reduce the substrate’s water absorption while maintaining breathability. It penetrates the material without forming a conventional surface film, thereby preserving the facade’s original appearance and causing no noticeable change in its color or sheen.

Protection Against Moisture and Aging

Water repellency helps prevent moisture stains and the appearance of efflorescence caused by the movement and crystallization of salts within porous materials. It also inhibits the conditions that promote mold growth and the gradual darkening of facades exposed to moisture and air pollution.

Monestir also attributes a consolidating function to the treatment, which helps reduce premature aging and wear of the substrate. By reducing water penetration, it also helps limit degradation processes associated with freezing and spalling that can occur in certain porous mineral materials.

Preparing the Facade

The substrate must be thoroughly clean and completely dry before beginning. Dirt, dust, moss, efflorescence, and residues from incompatible treatments must be removed. The effectiveness of a penetrating water repellent depends directly on the product’s ability to be absorbed by the material’s pores.

It is not advisable to apply an excessive amount to low-absorption surfaces, as the product remaining on the surface may cause whitish patches.

Proper Application

Hidroclay is applied undiluted. Before beginning, shake the product well and pour it into a clean container or directly into a spray bottle.

It can be applied with a wide brush, roller, or spray bottle. On facades, Monestir recommends applying a generous, even coat and working from the bottom up—a technique that helps control drips and ensures uniform penetration.

It is important not to oversaturate the surface. According to the manufacturer’s current instructions, Hidroclay does not allow for a second coat, so the first application must be evenly distributed.

When spraying, windows, trim, and other sensitive elements should be protected to prevent splatter.

Coverage, Temperature, and Drying

The approximate coverage is 8 to 12 m² per liter, depending on the porosity of the brick, stone, concrete, or cladding. Highly absorbent surfaces will consume more product than compact surfaces.

The recommended application temperature ranges from 5 to 35 °C. The product dries to the touch very quickly, although Monestir indicates that it reaches full effectiveness in approximately 24 hours. Brushes, rollers, and tools should be cleaned with water immediately after use.

Composition and Finish

It is formulated as a complex emulsion of water-diluted resins. It does not form a film that can flake off and allows the substrate to remain breathable. It is colorless, not designed to provide shine or a wet look, and is specifically intended to preserve a natural visual finish.
