Description

Specific Treatment for Minor Water Seepage

FILA SalvaTerrazza Eco is a water-repellent, consolidating protective coating developed for use on terraces, balconies, rooftops, roofs, and exterior cladding affected by minor water seepage through the material, joints, or microcracks.

It can be used on porcelain tile, ceramic tile, marble, natural stone, terrazzo, concrete, clay, Catalan mosaic tile, and extruded stoneware. It is designed for both horizontal and vertical applications and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

It does not function as a thick membrane applied over the flooring. Its technology works by penetrating the material and joints, allowing it to be applied to finished surfaces without covering them with a visible film.

Microcracks up to 1 mm

One of its most significant features is its ability to penetrate extremely small discontinuities.

FILA’s technical documentation specifies an approximate range from 0.5 microns to 1 mm. By penetrating these microcracks and pores, the product alters their behavior with respect to water and reduces the likelihood that they will act as pathways for water infiltration.

This does not mean it can repair any structural crack. Joint gaps, open breaks, and cracks larger than approximately 1 mm must first be cleaned out and filled with the appropriate repair material.

How It Works Chemically

The current formulation is based on functionalized silicon mineralizing microcrystals and silicates.

Its reactive molecules penetrate the substrate and form a network of branched bonds. FILA attributes two simultaneous effects to this mechanism:

Water repellency, reducing water absorption.

Consolidation, improving the substrate’s cohesion.

The resulting network does not completely seal the pores, thus maintaining vapor diffusion capacity.

Proven technical results

FILA has published several specific tests on this formulation.

The water-repellent action has been analyzed in accordance with UNI EN 15801:2010 using capillary absorption. Depending on the material tested, SalvaTerrazza Eco reduces water absorption by up to 97% after 24 hours.

On unpolished mineral surfaces, contact angle measurements according to UNI EN 15802 yield values greater than 130°. Conventionally, a surface is considered hydrophobic when it exceeds 90°.

Breathability has been tested according to ASTM E96M: FILA states that the treatment maintains more than 90% of the original material’s vapor permeability.

Consolidating Action

This performance is not limited to water. In abrasion tests on natural stone, FILA achieved a reduction in degradation of up to 80% compared to untreated samples.

Performance in saline environments has also been evaluated according to UNI EN 14147:2003, by subjecting materials to salt spray cycles using a sodium chloride solution. The goal is to reduce the erosive processes that mineral materials and joints may undergo when exposed to marine or saline environments.

This property is particularly beneficial for patios and facades near the sea.

UV Resistance and Surface Appearance

SalvaTerrazza Eco does not form a continuous surface film, does not yellow due to UV aging, and FILA states that it does not alter the surface’s original coefficient of friction.

This preserves the texture of the paving rather than adding a varnish-like layer that could alter its surface behavior.

Terrace Preparation

A thorough cleaning must be performed before treatment. FILA recommends PS87 Pro for proper cleaning and FASEZERO when there is particularly stubborn dirt or the surface requires intensive preparation.

All holes, open joints, and cracks larger than the treatment can penetrate must be repaired beforehand.

The surface must be clean so that SalvaTerrazza Eco can penetrate into the pores and joints rather than being trapped on surface dirt.

Application on Absorbent Materials

On clay, stone, Catalan tiles, and other absorbent materials, apply SalvaTerrazza Eco evenly over the entire surface using a brush, foam pad, or similar applicator, ensuring that joints and cracks are thoroughly saturated.

Do not dilute.

After application and before it dries, any residue remaining on the surface must be removed with a clean, absorbent cloth.

FILA recommends working in small areas to properly control this process.

Application on Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles

On porcelain stoneware and glazed ceramic tiles, the procedure differs because the tiles absorb virtually no product.

In these cases, FILA recommends applying the product only to joints and cracks. Unnecessarily covering the entire tile does not improve waterproofing and increases the amount of residue that will need to be removed later.

This detail is very important for porcelain tile patios: water typically enters through the joints and gaps, not through the porcelain tile itself.

Do not apply too much product

SalvaTerrazza Eco is a high-performance formulation. FILA expressly warns that applying large quantities does not improve performance, especially on porcelain tile and materials with very low water absorption.

The product must penetrate; it should not remain as a surface film.

For large surfaces, a rotary machine may also be used to help properly remove residue.

Return to Use

The surface can be walked on again after approximately 4 hours, while the protection is considered fully effective after 24 hours.

Do not apply if rain is expected within the next 24 hours or when the surface temperature exceeds approximately 30 °C during the hottest part of the day.

Coverage by Material

Approximately the following areas can be treated with 1 liter:

Clay, stone, and Catalan tiles
10–20 m².
Extruded stoneware
15 m².
Porcelain stoneware
30–40 m².

The significant difference in coverage is due to the varying absorption rates of each surface.

Maintenance

FILA recommends using diluted Cleaner Pro for subsequent routine maintenance. Tools used during application should be cleaned with water immediately after finishing.

SalvaTerrazza Eco does not protect against acidic chemical attacks and does not replace the repair of serious construction defects, structural movements, completely open joints, or inherently deficient waterproofing.
