Description

Preventive Protection for Cementitious Grout Lines

FILA FugaProof is a protective treatment specifically designed for cementitious grout lines in flooring and wall tiles. Its purpose is not to clean a grout line that has already turned black, but to reduce its ability to absorb water and stains after it has been properly cleaned or applied.

Cement grout has a porous structure. Without protection, liquids, grease, and dirt can penetrate its tiny pores and become progressively more difficult to remove. FugaProof impregnates the grout to reduce this absorption and subsequently facilitate maintenance operations.

It is suitable for all types of cementitious grout lines, both indoors and outdoors, and is particularly useful in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, light-colored flooring, and mosaic tiles with numerous grout lines.

Does not alter the appearance of the grout

A key feature is that the product is designed to preserve the original appearance of the grout.

It does not create a wet look, a sheen, or a visible film, nor does it intentionally alter the original color of the grout. This allows for the protection of white, gray, or colored grout without changing its appearance.

It is particularly useful on small-format mosaic tiles, since a very high proportion of the total surface area may consist of grout lines.

Water-Based, VOC-Free Technology

FugaProof is a water-based, ready-to-use protector that requires no dilution.

FILA certifies it as VOC-free, odorless, and rated A+ according to French VOC emission regulations. Its water-based technology also reduces the time required for treatment compared to traditional solvent-based protectants.

The safety data sheet lists its pH as approximately 9 and describes it as completely water-soluble.

Another practical advantage is that it can be applied even to surfaces that retain some residual moisture, although the joint must be properly prepared and free of dirt.

Preparation
Clean the grout line first

To ensure uniform protection, the grout line must be clean.

For existing grout lines, FILA recommends first using FugaNet. This removes dirt that might otherwise become trapped beneath the protective treatment.

Once cleaning is complete, the surface is ready to receive FugaProof.

For new joints, always observe the setting and curing time specified by the grout manufacturer before applying any subsequent treatments.

Spot application

FugaProof is used undiluted.

In its current spray bottle format, it is applied directly to the grout line. Care should be taken to saturate it evenly without unnecessarily soaking the entire tile.

Immediately after application, any product remaining on the tiles should be wiped off with a clean, dry cloth.

This step is important
the protective coating must penetrate the grout line and not dry, leaving residue on the ceramic tile surface.

For mosaics with very small tiles, where working grout line by grout line would be impractical, it may be more efficient to distribute the product over the entire surface and carefully remove the excess from the tiles.

Put into Service

The surface can be walked on again after approximately 4 hours.

However, the surface must not get wet during the first 24 hours after treatment. This period allows the protective coating to fully develop its water- and stain-resistant properties.

The recommended temperature of the material during application is between 10 and 30 °C, while the product should be stored between 5 and 30 °C.

The container must be protected from freezing.

What happens if dried product remains on the tile

If excess product is not completely removed during application and dried residue remains on the tiles, FILA states that it can be removed later using Cleaner Pro diluted approximately 1:30.

This underscores the importance of wiping away excess product during application, when it is still very easy to remove.

Coverage

The current 750-ml size offers a stated coverage of up to approximately 850 linear meters of grout line.

Consumption varies greatly depending on

Grout line width.

Depth and porosity.

Tile size.

Number of joints per square meter.

Amount of product absorbed.

A small mosaic tile will have many more linear meters of joint per square meter than a large-format tile.

FugaProof is not a substitute for waterproofing

Although it reduces water absorption in the grout lines, FugaProof should be understood as a surface-level stain-resistant and water-repellent protector, not as a structural waterproofing system.

It does not replace a waterproof membrane under the tile covering, does not repair cracked grout lines, and does not resolve leaks caused by movement, cracks, or construction errors.

For these situations, FILA offers different products and systems.
