Description

Technical Cleaning After Installation

FILA Deterdek Pro is a concentrated buffered acid detergent specifically designed for final cleaning after the installation of floor and wall tiles. Its primary function is to remove mineral residues that remain adhered after installation and grouting: cement residue, cement haze, construction debris, salt efflorescence, and lime scale.

It can be used on porcelain tile, ceramic tile, extruded stoneware, terracotta, and acid-resistant natural stone. It is also useful for deep cleaning outdoor flooring affected by dust, atmospheric dirt, or mineral deposits.

Buffered Acid vs. Traditional Acids

The formulation is based on buffered sulfamic acid and nonionic surfactants at less than 5%. The use of a buffered acid provides controlled descaling action and allows for the replacement of more aggressive products, such as hydrochloric acid, in many applications.

FILA emphasizes that Deterdek Pro does not emit the toxic gases characteristic of certain strong acids and, when used according to instructions, is safe for cementitious grout and nearby aluminum or stainless steel elements.

This formulation combines the acid’s action against mineral residues with detergent power, allowing it to descale and clean simultaneously.

What Types of Dirt It Can Remove

In addition to common installation residues, Deterdek Pro is suitable for:

Cement residues and films.

Cement grout residues, including certain grouts containing additives.

Efflorescence and salt deposits.

Calcareous deposits.

Mineral dirt on outdoor flooring.

Rust stains.

Scratches and marks left by metals on ceramic and porcelain tiles.

Marks from the ridges or backs of certain ceramic tiles.

Limescale buildup on compatible surfaces.

For residues from cementitious grouts containing additives, FILA recommends concentrations higher than those used for routine cleaning.

Technical Data

FILA’s technical documentation states

Composition
buffered acidic detergent based on sulfamic acid.
Nonionic surfactants
less than 5%.
Appearance
clear, colorless liquid.
Odor
virtually odorless.
Density
1.08 kg/L.
pH
approximately 0.8.
VOC
approximately 32.16 g/L.
Storage temperature
5–30 °C.
Application temperature
5–30 °C.

Despite its highly acidic pH, the buffered formulation is designed to provide more controlled performance than a mineral acid used directly.

Step-by-Step Post-Construction Cleaning

Before beginning, thoroughly wet the surface with water, including the joints. This step is important to limit excessive absorption of the cleaner by porous materials and to ensure uniform cleaning.

For routine post-construction cleaning, prepare a solution of up to approximately 1:5—that is, one part Deterdek Pro to five parts water—adjusting the concentration based on the amount of residue present.

Apply the solution to manageable sections of the floor and let it sit for approximately 2–3 minutes. Do not allow the product to dry on the surface.

Next, perform mechanical cleaning using a brush, a suitable scouring pad, or a single-disc machine. On relatively smooth porcelain tile, moderate mechanical cleaning may be sufficient; textured surfaces or more stubborn residue may require more intensive cleaning.

Removing Dirt

Once the residue has been loosened, it is essential to remove it completely. FILA recommends wiping up the liquid with a cloth or, especially for professional applications, using a wet vacuum.

This step serves an important purpose
if the dirty liquid remains on the floor, the loosened mineral residues may redeposit as the surface dries.

Next, rinse thoroughly with clean water until all traces of the detergent are completely removed.

If residue is still visible after drying, the procedure can be repeated by gradually increasing the concentration.

Aditive-treated cementitious grout and localized stains

To remove residue from certain prepared or aditive-treated grout, FILA recommends a dilution ratio of approximately 1:3.

For isolated rust stains or certain metallic streaks, the undiluted product may be applied locally, always after first verifying the surface’s compatibility.

Deep Cleaning of Outdoor Surfaces

For outdoor flooring primarily affected by atmospheric pollution, accumulated dust, and signs of aging, a less concentrated solution—around 1:10—can be used.

Apply the solution, let it sit, scrub mechanically, and finally vacuum or scoop up the solution before performing a thorough rinse.

Approximate Coverage

Coverage varies significantly depending on the material and concentration. FILA provides the following approximate guidelines:

Clay tiles, 1:5 dilution: 10–20 m²/L.

Stoneware and porcelain tiles, 1:5 dilution: approximately 40 m²/L.

In some applications on porcelain tile with higher dilutions, coverage of up to approximately 80 m²/L can be achieved.

Acid-resistant materials, dilution 1:5–1:10: approximately 20–35 m²/L.

These values refer to the concentrated product and are approximate.

Where Not to Use It

Deterdek Pro should not be used on polished marble or on acid-sensitive natural stone, such as certain limestones and travertines. The acid may react chemically with calcium carbonate, causing irreversible loss of luster or surface damage.

Before treating a stone whose resistance is unknown, a preliminary test must be conducted.

For nearby aluminum elements, FILA recommends strictly adhering to the dilution ratios and using a soft sponge.

Deterdek Pro vs. PS87 Pro

Both can be used for professional cleaning, but they address different problems. Deterdek Pro is primarily effective against mineral and inorganic dirt: cement, lime, saltpeter, rust, and installation residues. PS87 Pro is alkaline and excels at removing grease, organic dirt, waxes, and certain treatments.

Correctly identifying the nature of the dirt prevents you from using an inappropriate product on the floor.
