Suspension Element for Continuous Ceilings

The Knauf Suspension Rod is a metal component used to suspend the structure of certain continuous laminated gypsum board ceilings from the floor slab or base ceiling. Its function is to provide the necessary vertical clearance between the upper support and the suspended ceiling framing, allowing for the creation of spaces for utilities, insulation, height adjustments, or other construction requirements of the project.

In systems using the Maestra CD 60/27, Knauf uses the Ø4 mm smooth rod in conjunction with the CD 60/27 Combination Hanger. Together, they form an adjustable suspension system in which the hanger connects to the profile and the rod allows the height relative to the base ceiling to be set.

Knauf incorporates this in systems such as D112b.es, D113.es, and D127.es.

The Rod and Combined Hanger Work as a Single Unit

The rod alone does not constitute the complete suspension system. At its lower end, it must be used with the hanger element designed for the main track, and at the upper end, with an appropriate fastener to the existing support.

With the combination of the CD 60/27 Combination Hanger and a Ø4 mm suspension rod, Knauf specifies a maximum allowable load of 0.25 kN per suspension point.

This capacity should not be interpreted as authorization to freely choose the number of rods. The spacing between suspension points is determined by the ceiling system, the weight of the panels, the structure, insulation, potential additional loads, and the required performance.

Adjusting the Ceiling Clearance

The use of different lengths allows the suspended ceiling to be adapted to different suspension heights.

Knauf’s D11 system documentation specifies a minimum guideline height of approximately 110 mm for suspensions using the Combined Suspension system with rods in CD 60/27 systems, to which the geometry of the structure itself and the thickness of the panels must then be added to calculate the total height of the finished ceiling.

The longer variants allow for the installation in considerably larger spaces without having to improvise unplanned extensions.

Choosing the Length

Knauf offers rods in various lengths. It is advisable to choose the length closest to the required suspension height, taking into account:

the floor slab level;

the intended final height of the suspended ceiling;

the space required for utilities;

the insulation thickness;

the geometry of the suspension system;

the CD 60/27 structure;

and the total thickness of the panels.

The height of the suspended ceiling must be marked out in advance using a laser level or equivalent system before the suspension points are permanently secured.

Installation and Fastening to the Support

The suspension points are spaced according to the spacing defined in the corresponding Knauf technical data sheet.

The top fastener must be selected based on the material of the base ceiling. Concrete, metal elements, or other substrates may require different anchors. The strength of the assembly depends on the rod, the hanger, and the fastening to the substrate.

Do not use a anchor or fastener without certified load-bearing capacity for the existing material type.

Once the rods are installed, the hangers allow the CD 60/27 guide rails to be positioned and leveled before closing the structure and installing the panels.

Do not modify the hardware on-site

Knauf expressly states that its hardware is designed for the functions defined in the systems and must not be arbitrarily modified on-site.

Do not replace the rod with wires of a different diameter, bend it in an unintended manner, or combine it with components from other systems without first verifying their compatibility.

A seemingly minor modification can affect the load-bearing capacity of the suspension point and, by extension, the performance of the ceiling.

Protection of the metal component

The standard range of accessories for Maestra CD 60/27 uses galvanized components intended for the indoor environments specified by Knauf.

For ceilings exposed to high humidity or corrosive environments, specific C3-C5M accessories are available, which must be used in combination with the corresponding Maestra profiles and protective elements. In these situations, it should not be assumed that the standard rod can automatically replace a prescribed corrosion-resistant solution.
