View productReady-to-use lightweight paste for joint treatment and surface finishing of laminated gypsum boards, suitable for Q1 through Q4 levels and for manual or mechanical application.
Knauf Unik Fill & Finish Light is a ready-to-use, air-drying compound that combines joint treatment and surface finishing of laminated gypsum boards in a single product. It is the lighter version of Knauf Unik Fill & Finish and is specially designed for projects requiring a creamy, workable, and easy-to-sand compound that offers superior performance compared to a conventional compound.
It can be used for joint treatment with Knauf paper tape, filling screw heads, repairing minor imperfections, and applying thin-layer surface finishes to panels. It allows for finishes ranging from Q1 to Q4, making it suitable for both basic joint treatment and entire surfaces that will be coated with particularly demanding paints or finishes.
Knauf recommends it for panels with Afinado BA, Versátil BV, Cuadrado BC, and Cortado BCO edges, always following the procedure corresponding to the system and the desired finish level.
One of its main advantages on-site is that it is supplied ready-to-use. It does not require adding water for conventional mixing, nor does it require mixing or resting times before starting work.
Its formulation incorporates lightweight fillers that reduce the paste’s specific weight and allow for covering a larger surface area with the same amount of product. Knauf reports a yield approximately 35% higher than that of other conventional joint pastes.
This is particularly beneficial on high-ceiling projects, where it reduces both material consumption and the effort required to handle the buckets and apply the compound.
Its creamy, flexible texture allows it to be applied manually with a putty knife or trowel, as well as with suitable mechanical equipment.
To treat joints, the compound is applied to the joint between the panels, and Knauf paper tape is embedded, removing any excess and ensuring no air pockets remain. Once the first application is dry, the necessary subsequent layers are applied until the specified finish level is achieved.
For Q3 and Q4 finishes, it can be used to apply thin layers over a larger area of the board, reducing differences in texture and absorbency between the joint area and the board’s surface.
For machine application, the consistency can be adjusted according to the equipment’s instructions and Knauf documentation. Water should not be added indiscriminately, as excessive dilution alters the product’s consistency and performance.
One of the most interesting applications of Fill & Finish Light is achieving the Q4 level, the most demanding finish level in the surface treatment of gypsum board.
At this level, the work is not limited to the joint; instead, a fine skim coat is applied to virtually the entire surface. This reduces visible differences between the paper, the compound, and sanded areas and provides a much more uniform base for smooth paints, satin finishes, or raking light, where any irregularities may be more noticeable.
As a technical reference, Knauf’s documentation for Fill & Finish Light specifies an approximate consumption of:
Actual consumption will depend on the type of edge, number of joints, applied thickness, and level of finish.
Knauf Spain specifies an approximate drying time of 12 to 24 hours, depending on thickness, temperature, ventilation, and ambient humidity.
The recommended application temperature for the dry-set compounds in this product line ranges from approximately 5 to 30 °C.
Before applying a new coat or sanding, the previous coat must be completely dry. Applying successive coats to material that is still damp can prolong drying and cause uneven shrinkage.
Moderate, constant ventilation promotes even drying. It is not advisable to induce excessively rapid artificial drying by directing intense heat directly onto the surface.
Screw heads must be properly countersunk, without protruding and without having excessively torn the cardboard. Significant damage must be repaired before the final finish is applied.
A good result with Q3 or Q4 depends as much on the compound as on the structure’s prior flatness and the proper installation of the panels. A finishing compound cannot compensate for significant installation defects.
Once dry, Fill & Finish Light is easy to sand. Use an appropriate abrasive and avoid removing excess material from the joints.
After sanding, dust must be carefully removed before priming or painting. To achieve a uniform finish, Knauf recommends preparing the board and compound surfaces according to the intended final finish.
