View productSingle-component, self-expanding polyurethane foam for professional use with a spray gun, designed to fill, insulate, and seal gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and fixtures.
Sika Boom®-580 Fix & Fill is a general-purpose, single-component, self-expanding polyurethane foam specially designed for application using a dispensing gun. Its professional format allows for more precise control of the flow rate and the amount dispensed, which is especially useful when working continuously on assembly, renovation, and installation projects.
It is suitable for filling cavities and voids, sealing gaps around door and window frames, insulating against cold and drafts, and filling openings around pipes, ducts, and other penetrations.
It can be used for both interior and exterior applications, keeping in mind that cured polyurethane foam is not permanently resistant to ultraviolet radiation and must be protected if left directly exposed to the sun.
The foam exhibits good adhesion—typically without a primer—to numerous materials used on construction sites:
concrete;
brick;
wood;
metal;
aluminum;
and other compatible construction substrates.
The substrate must be firm, clean, and free of dust, oils, greases, loose particles, cement slurry, and poorly adhered paint.
For unusual materials or those whose compatibility is unknown, Sika recommends conducting a preliminary adhesion test.
The cellular structure that the foam develops once cured allows it to fill gaps that would otherwise allow the passage of air, cold, or noise.
For this reason, Sika Boom®-580 Fix & Fill combines three particularly useful functions:
gap filling;
thermal insulation;
sound damping.
It is especially practical around installations and woodwork, where small gaps between materials can become air and noise bridges.
However, it should not be considered a substitute for a certified waterproofing, structural insulation, or fire-resistant sealing solution when the project requires those specific performance characteristics.
Sika specifies an approximate post-expansion of 80%.
This means that the foam significantly increases in volume after it exits the container. When filling a void, this expansion must be taken into account, and the void should not be completely saturated with fresh product.
Controlled dispensing reduces waste and minimizes unnecessary stress on adjacent components.
Application using a spray gun provides more precise control than manual nozzle systems, especially when creating small beads or performing repetitive tasks.
For the 750-ml professional size, the technical documentation states approximately:
45 liters of expanded foam per aerosol can.
Approximately 33 linear meters of joint.
The linear yield is calculated based on a reference joint measuring 20 × 50 mm.
Actual values may vary depending on temperature, humidity, application depth, operator technique, and cavity geometry.
21 kg/m³.
-40 and +80 °C, with brief exposures permitted up to around +100 °C according to the current international technical data sheet.
The cured foam is light yellow in color.
Temperature has a significant influence on the expansion and curing of polyurethane foam.
A very cold aerosol may exhibit performance and expansion different from those expected; therefore, it should be brought to the recommended temperature range before use.
10 minutes until surface tack is gone.
35 minutes until a 30-mm bead can be cut.
These values are approximate and may vary depending on temperature, humidity, amount applied, and bead dimensions.
After curing, the foam can be cut, trimmed, sanded, and painted, facilitating the subsequent finishing of the filled areas.
Sika Boom®-580 Fix & Fill is specifically designed for professional application using a compatible dispensing gun.
The aerosol can is connected to the gun according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The equipment’s adjustment mechanism allows for controlling the amount of foam and applying controlled beads.
For deep fills, it is preferable to work in stages rather than applying a large amount all at once.
The correct technique must always account for the product’s subsequent expansion.
One of its common applications is filling the space between window and door frames and the building structure.
The foam helps fill in irregularities and reduce air and noise transmission, but it does not replace the mechanical anchors required to structurally secure a window or door, unless a specific system expressly states otherwise.
Likewise, when the joint requires weatherproofing against rain or joint movement, a complementary elastic sealant may be required.
For pipe and utility penetrations, it can fill the gaps between the installation and the hole in the wall or floor slab.
This helps prevent drafts and provides thermal and acoustic insulation around the penetration.
When the element passes through a fire-resistant compartment, specific fire-rated sealing solutions must be used; a general-purpose PU foam such as Fix & Fill should not be used as a substitute.
Cured foam is not permanently stable when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
If it remains exposed to the outside, it must be protected with a compatible finish, coating, sealant, or suitable paint. Prolonged unprotected exposure progressively degrades the foam’s surface.
After use, the gun can be cleaned using Sika Boom® Cleaner following the procedure specified by Sika.
Sika® Remover-208 can also be used for certain fresh residues.
It is essential to act before the foam hardens: cured polyurethane foam can only be removed mechanically.
